Remedies for Earache

Earaches are usually a by product of a cold and can happen to children and adults, though children are more prone to them and tend to get them more often. Fluids can build up in the Eustachian tubes creating pressure on the eardrum which can cause a lot of pain. The earaches do tend to be more common at night since you are laying down. You don't have to lose sleep or suffer needlessly with an earache. Here are some things that you can use to relieve the pressure and pain of an earache and maybe get a little sleep tonight:


1. Use a hair dryer, on a low setting, to relieve the pain. Just make sure that your hair dryer is on a low setting so you don't burn yourself. You also want a low fan speed since a heavy wind blowing at your ear will just make it feel worse.


2. Use a heating pad to lay on the outside of your sore ear to provide some pain relief.


3. Garlic is a natural antibiotic and can help relieve the pain of your ear. Just take a garlic clove, puncture it, drain the juice and add a few drops of that juice to your sore ear.


4. Take a few drops of mineral or olive oil and place it into the sore ear. These oils can help provide some relief from the pain. Warm the oil before putting it in your ear, make sure it's not too hot, it should be no hotter than body temperature. Use an ear dropper to apply a few drops, just enough to coat the inner ear is all you need.


5. Use a hot water bottle, or a microwave safe plate that has been heated up, wrap in a towel to soften it and to act as a barrier so you don't burn yourself, and lay your sore ear directly on the towel as if it were a pillow. The heat should offer some pain relief.


6. Many people have claimed to have more earache pain when they eat dairy products. If you are suffering from an earache, avoid milk, butter, cheese, and other dairy products until your earache has cleared up.


7. If your ear is sore due to an altitude change on a plane, just chew a piece of gum or some food. This should alleviate the pressure buildup and allow your ears to pop.

People from all over the world suffer from ringing, buzzing, humming, whistling and other annoying sounds in their ears. This is a condition known as tinnitus and it affects more than 40 million Americans alone. Some who suffer from the mild form only hear the noise at night or when everything is quiet around them. Shingles is a painful viral infection of the nerves that can leave you blistered and very sore. It comes from the same virus that chicken pox is from. You might be thinking that it isn't a serious problem, but alcoholism effects quite a few things in your life. Some of them are physical and only effects you while others will affect the world around you. Alcoholism is a disease that is capable of encompassing your whole life if left unchecked and untreated. The heart is also something that can be negatively effected. While a little bit of alcohol can have positive effects, too much can do you harm. It can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, and possible stroke. Risks of heart disease that you might already have are accentuated by heavy drinking.


The liver can be affected with alcoholic hepatitis that brings about jaundice, fever, and abdominal pain. Alcoholic hepatitis is reversible, but alcoholic cirrhosis, another threat to your health brought about by alcoholism, is not reversible. You can live longer by stopping drinking, but overall once the damage is done there is very little else that can be done short of a transplant. Problems with the liver can also effect the brain. You may not want this for yourself, but denial won't help you out. It's time to get started looking at this honestly. Are you an alcoholic? Here are ten things you can look to. Have you given up other activities because of alcohol?

Sometimes making sacrifices can be a good thing, but it depends on whether what you are making sacrifices for is truly more valuable than what you are giving up. Is your drinking really worth giving those other things up for?

You make choices every day based on what is more valuable to you. When you continue a destructive behavior in spite of the problems that behavior brings about, you are admitting that the behavior is far more important that what is hurt by it. If your family or job is negatively impacted by your drinking, but you continue to drink, then you are saying that drinking is more important.

Have you built up a tolerance for alcohol?

Think back to how much it used to take for you to get a buzz when you just started drinking? Compare that with how much it takes for you to have the same effect. If your body is getting more and more used to the intoxicating effects then you will be feeling more of the negative effects of drinking too much alcohol. It doesn't just get you drunk. Too much in your body will cause a multitude of other problems socially, physically, and mentally.

Have you hurt someone because of your drinking?

This could be mentally or physically. While both can have pretty negative consequences, the physical side of that can bring some serious long-term problems for you. Alcohol is many times thought of as liquid courage, but it could also be considered liquid stupid. You could find yourself in physical altercations with someone who might deserve a beating, but it could easily be that you could hurt someone who doesn't and worse, someone you care about.

Don't lie to yourself. Look closely in the mirror and see if you have a problem. Once you get to where you can see yourself, go get help.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy

Many who suffer from tinnitus have heard of tinitus retraining therapy. Tinnitus is a condition which is defined as ringing in the ears when there is no noise from the outside that is causing the sound. Ringing seems to be the most common sound that suffers of tinnitus report. However, some hear beeping, whistling, buzzing, rustling or other sounds rather than ringing. Although there is no cure for the condition, there are several methods of treatment.


How you go about treating your diagnosed tinnitus will depend on what the cause of your condition is. Sometimes the cause is a very evident one like having too much wax in your ear, strong allergies, high blood pressure, etc. Other times, there may seem to be no physical cause and, in that case, the possible causes are really endless. It could be stress, over-exposure to loud noises, mental illness, and other more intangible factors. The hearing system is extremely sensitive and can be thrown off when other things in the body are imbalanced as well. So, there are many strategies that have worked for different types of tinnitus suffers.


Tinitus retraining therapy is one of these methods and it is a relatively new approach. It involves masking the noise with a "masker" that you wear on your ear to block out the disturbing noise and, at the same time, trying to focus on other noises than those that are inside their ears. The goal is to start the patient out with a masker to help them focus on other sounds and, by the end of the training, have them remove the masker and be able to do so without it.


Antibiotics is another possible "cure". If your ear ringing is causes by an infection, this is all you will need to get rid of the problem. If you get to your doctor in the early stages of the infection, it will not progress to tinnitus. As with all antibiotics, you must take the full course of the medication so that your infection doesn't come back stronger than the first time.


Maskers by themselves, without the therapy that goes with it, can drown out the ringing with another noise. These tend to work better for milder cases of tinnitus and they are worn just like a hearing aid. If you can stand by the water faucet with the water turned all the way on, and if you hear only the water, you will likely benefit from using a masker.


Tinnitus is a disorder that, in mild forms, is very disturbing, and in more severe forms can be debilitating and lead to permanent hearing loss. Tinnitus retraining therapy, masking and antibiotics are just some of the ways that tinnitus suffers are dealing with the condition.

Options for Chronic Back Pain Relief

There are two types of pain that you will feel. One is a sharp and quick pain that comes and goes quickly known as acute pain. The other kind comes gradually and lasts for long periods of time known as chronic. Pain Relief for Sciatica

Back pain is usually a big deal, but when it is accompanied with a numbness, tingling, weakness, or travels down your leg you might have a serious matter to take care of. Sciatica is a pain along the sciatic nerve. It is caused by pressure put on the sciatic nerve. Most cases aren't too serious and can clear up within a couple of months, but there is a chance that it could be the sign of a serious problem.

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It starts branching off the nerve roots at the lower part of the spinal cord. There are two branches, each following down one leg traveling through the pelvis, buttocks, back of the leg, and down to the foot.

Sciatica usually only happens on one side and is brought about by inflammation or compression on the nerve. There are also instances in which it is caused by nerve damage. Sciatica is not a disease. It is a symptom of another problem. For this reason, it is good to see a physician to have it checked out and diagnosed. It could be a pinched nerve or a herniated disk or it could be something worse.

Ice can help lessen the effect of acute attacks as can better posture. Using the right chair that pushes your stomach out and shoulders back will help a lot as will using a firm mattress.

Make sure you avoid standing up or sitting down for long periods of time without a break. Also, avoid lifting heavy objects unless you take proper care in doing so using proper lifting techniques.

Sciatica can be a pain that affects more than your back. Make sure that you address the cause and try these sciatica pain relief methods to see if one of them will help end that shooting pain.

Tinnitus - Buzzing Sounds and Ear Disturbances

A lot of people suffer from buzzing sound ear disturbances which are caused by a condition called tinnitus. If you have this condition, you may have already realized that the sounds you hear are not limited to buzzing. They also include ringing, beeping, and humming, among others. Unfortunately, most medical professionals agree that there is no cure for this disturbance. However, there are ways that you can learn to deal with it.

The ear disturbance named tinnitus is not a disease or illness, but a symptom that has affected the brains and/or ears because of other problems. Almost 20 percent of those who do suffer from this condition are bothered enough by it to seek out medical help.

Some recommend sound therapy to help you cope with your buzzing sound ear disturbances. Examples of this include listening to white noise (provided by a while noise machine, fan, running water, etc) or quiet music. This is especially important at night when you need to get some good quality sleep. Having white noise and/or quiet music can block out the sounds in your ears. Others recommend eating certain foods that are rich in zinc vitamin B12 and/or avoiding certain foods such as those that contain caffeine. Although the tinnitus cure has not yet been discovered, several organizations like the American Tinnitus Association are pressing the government to help them by increasing funding for research.
